What's Up Wednesday

It’s What’s up Wednesday with Sheaffer & Shay! I’m sharing a little about what’s been going on around here this month.

What We’re Eating this Week

We are in back to school mode and fall sports are in full swing, which means a full schedule. The crockpot has been my best friend the past couple of weeks.

What I’m Wearing

For some reason, I’ve grown sick of leggings and yoga pants. I LIVED in them for the past couple of years but I always felt a little blah when I had to leave the house. I wanted something that looked slightly more put together without sacrificing the comfort. My new transition to fall staples are these joggers, all the lightweight sweatshirts, and my favorite romper (I love this one too!). Easy to dress up a little bit if I have a meeting, but comfortable enough to wear around the house and to all the soccer and baseball practices.

What I’m Loving

My minimized makeup routine! I started using a matte tinted moisturizer in place of any foundation or powder and I’m in love. It gives just the right amount of coverage and the matte version gives the appearance that i have a little bit of foundation on. The best part is that it has sunscreen so I just need this one bottle. If you like a more dewy look, that version is great too. I used it all summer. I add a little mascara and lip gloss and I’m good to go!

What I’m Excited About

FALL! Once school starts, I’m completely over the hot weather. Bring on the cooler nights and comfy clothes.

Also, I’ve gotten back into using Ibotta. Ibotta is a free app that gives you cash back from shopping in-store or online. You can save available offers in the app and redeem them by shopping through the app, or uploading receipts. After using this without changing my regular shopping habits, I usually earn somewhere between $50- $100 a month. Not enough to replace any income, but enough to pay for a pedicure and something fun just for me. Most major grocery stores are on there and you can even get cash back for travel. Last year, I saved a few months and cashed out with an Amazon gift card to use for holiday gifts. You can download and sign up here . You will get $5 automatically when you submit your first receipt!

What I’m Reading/Listening To

All the audiobooks! I stuck to lighter books most of the summer, but many of the books I chose in August were a little deeper. Here’s the list:

Here One Moment By Liane Moriarty. (4/5) This story kicks off when a group of strangers are brought together in an unexpected way, and from there it unravels how one single moment can ripple through each of their lives. It’s very much about timing, chance, and how people carry their hidden stories. I like the pace of this book and that it followed multiple storylines. The ending came together better than I was expecting, however, I probably wouldn’t have finished as fast if it wasn’t an audio book.

Only the Beautiful By Susan Meissner (4/5). This story moves between 1930s California and wartime Europe, following two women whose lives are miles and decades apart but end up connected. It’s a powerful look at resilience, loss, and the way choices made connect over generations. It was beautifully written, heart wrenching at times and really made me think. If you like historical fiction, this one is worth a read.

The Emperor of Gladness By Ocean Vuong (3/5). This story starts with a young man about to jump from a bridge when an elderly woman with dementia literally calls him back from the edge. He ends up moving in with her and caring for her, and through that unexpected bond, plus his quirky fast-food job crew, he finds a kind of family, a sense of purpose, and maybe even a reason to stick around. I thought this one was just ok. I really wanted to love the storyline, but I found myself getting bored/frustrated in some places. I haven’t had such a love/hate relationship with a book in a long time. If you’ve read this one, I’d love to know your thoughts!

Go As a River By Shelley Read (4/5).This one follows 17-year-old Victoria (Torie) who’s holding down the family peach farm in Iola, Colorado, after devastating losses. One day she meets Wilson Moon, a stranger with a gentleness that pulls her in, and from there, her world falls apart. It’s about grief and survival, a heartbreakingly beautiful love, racing to outrun loss, and how even when home disappears, you learn to keep going. This was another solid read.

It’s a Love Story By Annabel Monaghan (4/5). Jane Jackson spent her teen years as an awkward sitcom punchline everyone remembers. Now, as a Hollywood producer, she tries to connect with one of her former co-stars to help with a song for the movie she wants to make. She ends up teaming up with a new colleague to try to find him and romance ensues. This was a wonderful light read after several heavier books this month. Easy and fun!

Now it’s time for all the fall reads. If you have and fall-themed recommendations, let me know if the comments. I love a good (light) witchy romance or really anything that gives the cozy vibes.

What Amazon Purchase Did I Love This Month

My new Breville air fryer/toaster oven/everything combo! My old one was starting to cook slower and I was getting so frustrated with the size. We finally broke down and bought this new one. It has all the features and works for toasting, roasting, air frying, baking, and even slow cooking. A little pricey but so worth it! This one looks so much nicer on our counter and it can even fit a frozen pizza. I can’t wait to try out some new recipes!

What I’m Doing This Weekend

We only have ONE thing on the calendar this weekend so I’m looking forward to some relaxing family time and an extra day off!

I hope everyone has a great week!
